Fear of sedation

Gradually, our patients stopped being afraid of the surgery itself and the possible unsuccessful results. But the fear of sedation remains. Perhaps because of the many urban legends about life being shortened by full anesthesia, etc. Let me answer some of the most common questions my patients ask:

How long does the sedation last?

Sedation begins and you fall asleep about 10-15 minutes before the actual surgery. At the completion of the work scheduled, 5-10 minutes later you are already awake. Modern awake sedation makes it possible to control how deep you sleep during surgery. The anesthesiologist is in complete control of the duration of your sedation.

- When will I wake up after surgery?

You wake up after the operation is finished, probably 5-10 minutes after its end. About 20 minutes after that you are ready to leave, but you must have an attendant. Someone should accompany you to your home (or your hotel, respectively). Preferably a relative, not a driver for example. If you wish, this could be a member of our staff. You will be sleepy for the first 10-20 minutes and the conversation with you will take place at a slow pace. Some patients tell us what they dreamt of during the sedation. Sometimes the patient may remember words of the surgeon from the beginning or the end of the surgery, but perceive them as if they took place during surgery.

Can I wake up during surgery?

It happens sometimes, but as a rule, patients do not remember any of this. They just open their eyes and then fall asleep again.

Can I not wake up?

For 8 years and more than 2000 sedations of children and adults, this has never happened! In our franchise group, we have more than 15 years of experience and tens of thousands of patients without such an incident. Of course, the medical risk is always present, but when the rules and work algorithms are followed, and we have super equipment, it is extremely low.

Don't save on sedation. Without it, it can be extremely uncomfortable for both parties (the medical team and the patient).

Good sedation can't be cheap!
