On prophylaxis
Despite taking the risk of sounding trite, I would like to discuss prophylaxis and hygiene in children, from a slightly different perspective. When we were planning the Children’s Dental Clinic, we wanted to focus heavily on prophylaxis and hygiene. Not only for children, but for adults, as well. The premises we chose made this possible, so we dedicated a vast space for 4 separate rooms for professional hygiene only. We also selected a set of personal oral hygiene products: toothpastes, toothbrushes, washes, etc. in line with the needs during childhood. Products that cannot be found in pharmacies or regular stores. And we started spreading out the idea of a life without tooth decay.
What does this mean?
This is the idea: the replacement of the primary (baby) teeth by permanent ones is not a single, one-off process, or a single act. It goes on for approximately 6 years, starting at the age of about 6 years and ending at the age of 12. And, when the tooth erupts, its enamel is rather immature and cannot protect against the aggressive environment in the mouth. So, caries occurs. The more acids (and these originate from sweet food) in the mouth, the more caries there are. Sometimes, there are extremely many of them, at a terribly young age. I often meet children of 3-4 years, having 5-6 or even more decayed teeth.
The solution?
Helping the enamel of permanent teeth mature properly. Then, it can be efficiently protected and the cases of tooth caries will then be only isolated.
How?
Through professional hygiene, fluoridization and hermitization of fissures . Four times per year! We also teach parents how to monitor their children’s personal hygiene, to help them with it and encourage them to be strict about it. Of course, there are also many other factors in play: genetic predisposition, food, saliva, etc., but the effect of timely visits for professional hygiene is clear. These children do not know what tooth cavities or toothache is, nor what it is not to be able to eat or smile properly.
Partially as a joke, but also partly seriously, we came up with something that we called “The Petar Duchev Kids Formula“:
4 PH(DCO) / 2 PH(AM+PM) = cavity-free childhood
In other words: four times a year professional hygiene and fluoridization at the Dental Care Office over two times daily of personal hygiene – in the morning and at bedtime, equals perfect results.
Do not think of professional hygiene as an annoying chore. What I promise is a SPA procedure. Your children will love it!
Try it out!
